Advancement of Standards  OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) is a not-for-profit, international consortium that drives the development, convergence, and adoption of e-business standards. The consortium produces more Web services standards than any other organization along with standards for security, e-business, and standardization efforts in the public sector and for application-specific markets. OASIS has more than 5,000 participants representing over 600 organizations and individual members in 100 countries.
Creative Commons  first project was the release of a set of copyright licenses free for public use. Taking inspiration in part from the Free Software Foundation's GNU General Public License (GNU GPL), CC has developed a Web application that helps people dedicate their creative works to the public domain — or retain their copyright while licensing them as free for certain uses, on certain conditions. C C licenses are not designed for software, but rather for other kinds of creative works: websites, scholarship, music, film, photography, literature, courseware, etc.
Electronic Frontier Foundation  is a group of passionate people — lawyers, technologists, volunteers, and visionaries — working in the trenches, battling to protect your rights and the rights of web surfers everywhere. The dedicated people of EFF challenge legislation that threatens to put a price on what is invaluable; to control what must remain boundless. Electronic Frontier Foundation: Because being able to share ideas and information is the reason the Web was created in the first place!
GNU  Project was launched in 1984 to develop a complete UNIX style operating system which is free software: the GNU system. (GNU is a recursive acronym for "GNU's Not UNIX"; it is pronounced "guh-noo".) Variants of the GNU operating system, which use the kernel Linux, are now widely used; though these systems are often referred to as "Linux", they are more accurately called GNU/Linux systems.
Open Source Initiative  (OSI) is a non-profit corporation dedicated to managing and promoting the Open Source Definition for the good of the community, specifically through the OSI Certified Open Source Software certification mark and program. You can read about successful software products that have these properties, and be confident that software really is "Open Source."
Softpanorama  is an "anti-hype" self-education oriented CS site that tries to counter the current "software over-complexity" drive (or at least might help to keep you afloat longer ;-). "Slighly skeptical" approach makes it different from most of the open source sites in which people primarily seek out points of view to which they already subscribe.
The Free Standards Group  is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to accelerating the use of free and open source software by developing and promoting standards. Key projects and workgroups that fall under the Free Standards Group umbrella include the Linux Standard Base (LSB), OpenI18N (formerly Li18nux), LANANA and OpenPrinting.
Union for the Public Domain  (UPD) is a non-profit citizens group. Our mission is to protect and enhance the public domain in matters concerning intellectual property. We are a membership organization, acting as an independent voice on intellectual property issues.
World Wide Web Consortium  was created in October 1994 to lead the World Wide Web to its full potential by developing common protocols that promote its evolution and ensure its interoperability. W3C has around 350 Member organizations from all over the world and has earned international recognition for its contributions to the growth of the Web.
Xiph.Org  Xiph.Org is about open source and the ideals for which free software stands. Open source is not a fad any more than the Internet is. It is a necessary force driving innovation and the Internet forward while protecting the interests of individuals, artists, developers and consumers. The Xiph.Org Foundation is a non-profit corporation dedicated to protecting the foundations of Internet multimedia from control by private interests.
